Event to give prom dresses to girls in need

A Wayne Local official gets to be a little like the fairy godmother, helping girls get to be a little like Cinderella at their high school prom. Wayne Local Commission Vice Chairwoman Alisha Bell, D-Detroit, will host her 9th annual Belle of the Ball event to give prom dresses to girls in need on April 16.  “It’s a great way for us to help girls in need with the expense of attending a once-in-a-lifetime event, ” Bell said in a statement Mon. “This marvelous example for the girls to experience the generosity of those around them. ” Girls can choose free formal and semi-formal dresses, shoes, purses and jewelry. Some items are new, some are gently used and all are donated. Dresses will be arranged by size.

 Bell estimates that in the event’s eight years, more than 1, 400 dresses have been given away, including 200 last year. She said she started case during the Great Recession knowing it can cost girls $500 or more to go to their prom, and that many can’t afford it. Many professional women have dresses they’ve worn just once, so it’s a great way for the prom dresses cheap to be used again, she said. Businesses also give away dresses and accessories. Sponsors include Unique Lady, Burlington Coat Manufacturing plant and Sears. The Answer Military also donates items and employees’ time, and the Children’s Center in Detroit donates clothes shelving.
